Job 19:25 contains Job’s desire for hisg ō’ēl (“Redeemer”), who will deliver Job from his unjust suffering. The topic of Job’s gō’ēl is so important for understanding how Job wants to solve his unjust suffering. However, the text is ambiguous and difficult to interpret that so far many scholars have proposed various views of the gō’ēl, whereas few studies have been done on this subject by Koreanb iblical scholars.
The purpose of this paper is to suggest that Job’sg ō’ēl is one of the heavenly beings who can provide opportunities for Job to face God and to plead his unjust suffering, and that this heavenly being is an imaginary entity that Job desires. For that purpose, this paper proceeds in the following order. First, it shows what situations entail Job’s desiring his gō’ēl earnestly in Job 19:1-24. This will provide a preliminary consideration of what role Job expects from theg ō’ēl, and of who can become Job’s gō’ēl. Second, various hermeneutic possibilities for Job’s gō’ēl are presented through textual studies on 19:25. Third, three representative views on Job’s gō’ēl (Job’s nearest relative, God, and a heavenly being) are mentioned and diagnosed in terms of the advantages and problems of each.F inally, Job’s dire situation is presented in which Job had no choice but to wish ot have his heavenly being, and suggests Job’s gō’ēl as an imaginary heavenly being under God’s sovereignty. This paper, therefore, proposes such a new alternative by correcting and supplementing the existing views on Job’s gō’ēl.
