This paper reviews the developing process and the historical significance of the Navy emblem, the symbol of the ROK Navy.
It was 1958 July, various commands had the task of submitting the design for the Navy emblem when the ROK Navy HQs suggested the necessity of having one that symbolizes the Navy as a whole. 12 people from 9 commands participated in the competition. When the designs were collected, the Navy HQs" ceremonial committee selected four candidates in September 17th, 1958. Then in December 16th, 1958, in the Operational HQs conference, the final design by Yong-gul Go was chosen and designated as the official Naval Emblem in which the Turtle Ship with an anchor and wings is illustrated. The emblem also had a chain and a ribbon that said Republic of Korea Navy. From 1959, Go"s Navy emblem was used in all Naval commands.
Since August 1969, the Naval emblem started to undergo some changes due to the accusation that the winged-Turtle Ship was imitative of the one in a different country. Therefore, the ROK Navy HQs changed the design. In the ceremonial committee held in August 1969, it was decided that the hat device insignia - used by the officers back then - would be used as the background while keeping that original chain and ribbon. The main symbol of the officers" hat device insignia was the Turtle Ship.
The revised Navy emblem is historically significant due to the fact that the symbol represents that the ROK Navy inherited the Chosun Navy"s history and tradition while accepting Admiral Yi, Sun-shin as its ancestor. The revised Navy emblem began to be used from 1970 and it is still used as the official Navy emblem that represents the ROK Navy, withholding its great reputation.
