The purpose of this study is to propose the fundamental process in the program development for the grandparent education and support program in chid care centers. To find the answers, literatures related to this subject are surveyed, especially in the fields of parent education, early childhood education, child development, pedagogy, and curriculum development. And a need assessment is applied. Conclusions drawn through this study on the appropriate process are as follows:
1. The process of development for grandparent education and support program should be based on the consideration of the grandparents who were intended to participate for the best results of the program.
2. The process in the establishment of the educational objectives should consider followings: The social needs and social-cultural phenomenon in Korea; the characteristics of grandparents in the learning and developmental stages as learners; subject specialists in the various fields; educational philosophy and psychology.
3. The process in the selection of the program content should consider followings: The national and social needs in Korea; previous academic works in the various fields; subject specialists’ opinions; grandparents demands.
4. The process in the application of the program: Grandparents, the learners of the program and grandparent educators and other staffs have to be selected; instruction-learning activities and methods should be determined according to the personnel who participate in the program.
5. Various types of assessment should be included in the process of program development, application and after the program implementation.
