This paper discusses translational processes and strategies with Chinese-Korean translation of metaphorical expressions in literary texts from a Relevance Theory perspective. The idea of the Relevance Theory comes from Sperber and Wilson, who introduced the relation of the relevance between communication in a cognitive view. The paper studies the translation with the relevance theory, mainly with the theories which Gutt has adopted in analysing translation. Based on a relevance theory perspective on metaphors and Gutt’s theory in translation studies, metaphoric expressions in the ST(Chinese) are analyzed and compared with the TT(Korean). This study examines that how the so-called contextual effects in Relevance Theory can provide some help for translating metaphors.
Based on these theoretical considerations, five specific methods of metaphor translation are discussed with an analysis of examples: 1)Translating metaphor into metaphor, 2)Translating metaphor into another metaphor in ST, 3)Changing metaphor by using a non-metaphorical device, 4)Translating metaphor with additional explanations, 5) Adding an additional description while keeping metaphor.
