The stereotype of older adults as burdensome and needy dependents has been persistent. Increasing recognition thar many healthy older adults are able to make and are making significant contributions to society, and the emergence of the concept of productive aging, however, has lead social scientists to pay more attention to productive role activity in later life. In this article, the current research on the potential benefits and costs of productive role activity is reviewed focusing on employment and providing informal support to others. The studies examining the effects of two dimensions of productive role activities(i.e, employment and providing support to others) have supported the idea that productive role activity is beneficial for well-being among older adults, although as yet in a preliminary and inconsistent way. In relation to issues of health and well-being, the nature of the mechanism or mechanisms through which productive role activity have effects and the moderating factors of the association between productive role activity and health have haraly been studied and are recommended for future research
