The purpose of this work is to explore the theoretical approaches of erect posture and exercise movement skills, and then to apply then to the physical education practices for elementary school students. Historically, the development of the erect posture can be traceable to the evolution of the human environmental habitat which originally started from the water. About two million years ago, their living habitats were established on the soil. Living in the water, four legs were conveniently applied to do everything, but on the soil, only two of the four were employed for walking. However, while walking in the erect postural position, four legs made this task unstable. This posture was physiologically insecure for standing, but it was biologically secure for the same. This indicates that the erect posture is peculiar to human beings in that the spinal cord was originally more curved to accomodate the use of four legs. The erect posture and the erect exercise movement skills are recognized as the cultural inheritance handed down from one generation to another. Every human being can stand, walk and run with ease. By contrast, he or she might only copy the locomotive patterns of the four-footed animals without the optical environmental stimuli related to the erect posture. The establishment of the erect posture relied heavily on the efficiency of physical movement in which the continuity is maintained. Considering the evolution of man, correct posture is essential for human development during the early childhood years. Therefore, the contents of the children`s physical education should be carefully chosen on the basis of knowledge of their stages of physical development. In addition, it should be designed in accordance with each development stage.
