The philosophies of the East and the West have their own historical origins and developments. There were and are surely some different concepts of physical movement of human body between the West and the East. These differences between the East and the West can be found in sports and martial arts. Many think the martial arts is synonmous with sport because of some superficial similarities in physical activity. However, those have fundamental differences in history and philosophy. It is needed to understand the essential factors of Eastern martial arts by examining philosophical backgrounds. The purpose of this study is to suggest the right principle of Eastern martial arts through exploring the basic philosophy of martial arts. To to this I describe Eastern mind-body culture and Western mine-body culture through their perception of human body and physical movement. Eastern mind-body culture is based on the concept of harmony and emphasizes the unity of knowledge and action, that is, the East tends to be synthetic rather than analytic. Eastern monism can be explined by the Doctrine of Li and Chi, the Unity of Knowledge and Action, and the Theory of Yin and Yang. On the other hand, Western culture has shown a tendency to interpret the relationship between the mind and the body in terms of separation. The idea of separation between mind and body was inherited by Plato and Descartes who asserted the supremacy of mind over body. Self-understanding and self-reliance are basic in Eastern martial arts and philosophy. That is, the self is considered a crucial concept and man is considered as an active agent. On the other hand. Westerners have played and watched sports to imitate the gods, to become godlike in their worship. that is, the god is considered a crucial concept. In sport game, winning is reserved for only one individual or team. Thus, the result of game has many losers, but only winner. The structure of sport emphasizes competition for rewards and the necessity for winning over other competition. This means that the sport value is the value of selfishness. Since the philosophy of the martial arts is connected with the good life, particularly the welfare of human life, like Eastern philosophy in which the ultimate aim is what is good for life, moral discipline is emphasized. The essence of the Eastern martial arts is self-discipline and self-perfection through physical exercise. In this sense, one can achieve perfection through practice of virtue.
