Shakespeare reveals the self-awareness of the blind Gloucester and the mad Lear in King Lear. The story of Gloucester and his two sons reflects that of Lear and his three daughters in the main plot of the play. Gloucester’s relationship with his sons reinforces the relationship between Lear and his daughters. The main plot and the subplot reflect each other in terms of theme and the process of recognition. The play presents the incongruity between appearance and reality through the betrayal of hypocritical children and the blindness of the fathers who are ignorant of their children’s reality.
Gloucester is ignorant of both his own identity and Edmund’s identity at the beginning of the play. However, he recognizes himself, his sons, and the reality of his world through extreme suffering. The play illustrates the process of Gloucester’s gaining wisdom through suffering. Gloucester’s self-awareness is the starting point of wisdom and leads him to recognize truth. The play reveals paradoxically that the mad and the blind old fathers recognize their own status and reality at the end of the play. Gloucester shows insight into reality in the state of physical blindness as Lear does in the state of insanity. This paper discusses the process of Gloucester’s recognition in the subplot of the play and how it manifests Lear’s awareness in the main plot.
