Social networking services (SNS) serve as an online platform to exchange information and opinions between users and to build personal connections. However, the burden SNS users experience in the process of making efforts to maintain online relationships with acquaintances and/or consulting and using information shared on SNS may lead to fatigue associated with SNS use. In this study, we investigate drivers of SNS fatigue with a focus on cognitive and behavioral factors experienced in the course of using SNS, and the consequence of SNS fatigue. Our empirical analysis through an online survey shows that subjective norm on SNS use increases SNS fatigue, while the enjoyment experienced from SNS use reduces fatigue. Further, it is found that habitual use of SNS does not significantly affect fatigue. Finally, it turns out that SNS fatigue increases the intention to stop using SNS. Based on the analysis results, implications of the study are discussed.
