We investigated effects of water temperature and pH on degradation of organics, nutrients and heavy metals by a mixture of microorganisms, also known as beneficial microorganisms (BM), to assure operating parameters for the water quality improvement of rivers and streams. Water and sediment samples were obtained from Icheon Stream in Seongju, Korean, and experiments were conducted over five days after injection of BM to the samples. Degradation rates of organics by BM evidently decreased at 10℃ comparing with 15-25℃, which implied this biological approach could be hard to apply at lower temperature. Degradation rates of organics by BM did not show distinct difference at pH 7-8. Nitrification was 10-20% slower at lower temperature (10℃) than 25℃; degradation of heavy metals by BM was minimal except for Zinc which degraded about 75% over five days. Organics and heavy metals in the sediments hardly degraded over five days. Among microbial communities Proteobacteria increased, but Actinobacteria decreased. Proteobacteria include nitrifying species, and Actinobacteria can produce Geosmin.
