Slave-like conditions of Filipino women domestic workers have been part and parcel of Philippine society for generations and generations past. This phenomenon is one of the many realities women face in a poverty-stricken country. This paper discusses the profile of Filipina domestic workers, the socio-political and economic character of the Philippine society, the undervaluing of domestic labor, and the existing legal framework protecting domestic workers. Dire economic conditions which entail landlessness and joblessness among the peasantry and workers force people into precarious and unjust labor conditions. In the midst of abject poverty, countless women choose to endure unjust work conditions, meager salary, and abuse from their `masters` in exchange for a full stomach and a roof over their head. Meanwhile, patriarchal culture assigns a category of labor to women that involves the exploitation of domestic and reproductive work. This paper explores how the cultural, political, and economic landscape in the Philippines lends itself to the creation of slave-like conditions for women fighting to make a decent living.
