In this paper, I am going to talk about the discrimination women go through in the democratic and development process in India. Be it at the household or national level, the participatory role of women in the decisionmaking process across the levels of democratic and development processes is being suppressed. The women in India think that discrimination such as being in the veil or being behind closed doors is their destiny, that this is what they are supposed to do in order to meet society"s requirements for them. The daughters, mothers, and sisters in doing so have forgotten their womanhood and the power they possess. This is all about the mindset of the people. To change this, I suggest educating and empowering young girls and gender mainstreaming young boys, so that when they become women and men, they will have that open-minded sense of their duties.
