Advocating for women’s rights in a largely matrilineal society where women traditionally enjoy a fair standing is tricky, to say the least. More often than not, the Bhutanese women’s right and voice for equality in social, political and economic spheres are not genuinely acknowledged or disregarded. Because Bhutanese women, in general, are fairly better off than her neighboring Indian or Nepali sisters - hence, assumed that Bhutanese women face no gender discrimination. We face hidden discrimination. We are expected to be happy with the status quo. But the status quo speaks otherwise - an example, women leadership constitutes only 7% of the parliament of Bhutan. This paper urges to reach higher, to take the next step up beyond the base of the pyramid to higher standards, by redefining women’s rights and gender equality in the modern Bhutanese society, taking into consideration and the cultural nuances layered upon with changes of progressive attitudes, mindsets and policies.
