This paper aims to find the difference of the reporting norms, the norms concerning writing verbal signs that convey the meaning of image in particular, between the source and target country"s media. In addition, this paper also seeks to identify image-related translation strategies in TV news. The key findings are as follows.
The media of the US and the UK considers image sings and verbal signs as a means to deliver objectivity and subjectivity, respectively, and their reporting norm is that subjective verbal signs should not fix the meaning of the objective image signs. This is called "distance norm". On the other hand, the media of Korea considers both image and verbal signs as a means to deliver objectivity and its reporting norms is that objective verbal signs should fix the meaning of the objective image signs, which is called "redundancy norm".
Key Image-related translation strategies in TV news are the explicitation of the actor, vector, goal and the soundbite in action process image into verbal signs and the explicitation of the emotion of the reactor in reactional process image into verbal signs.
