This thesis is internal and external status through the kings" succession and change about understanding Balhae in the diplomatic documents written by Choi Chiwon around king Jinseong period. It was from king Taejongmooyeol period when diplomatic documents were written rather properly in Silla and they were more refined than the previous period as Sangmoonsa was established as was seen from dapseolinguiseo and Geoljoipyo. And only the part of main text of the diplomatic documents sent from Silla to Tang were descented recorded in Samguksagi. On the other hand, 9 pyo and 5 Jang written by Choi Chilwon showed main text, Dusa, and Misa so the format of diplomatic documents could be roughly known. The reason king Jinseong abdicated the throne was previously said that king Jinsung was enthroned on behalf of Yo in one of the documents written by Choi Chiwon in Napjeongjeolpyo and others. But the expressions such as Seori, Yimsi etc. meant modesty that it ruled Silla on behalf of the emperor. Therefore after king Jinseong was enthroned in the right course, he did Jeongji about the successor king and he made the second Yo as Jongtonghwa and abdicated to him. Especially the process of Jongtonghwa was known in the chujeungho asking and its using by king Kyeongmoon and king Heongang.
In the meantime, in Sabulheobukgukgeosangpyo, Balhe was stated not successive nation but the different nation. This change of understanding Balhe was admonition about disunity of Silla around king Hyogong. And Balhe was understood subordinated nation and not comparable with Silla in relation with Tang. This looked related to Jengjang event in external side but it was closely related to the cultural dignity like dispatching Sookwi students in inner side. With this, we could see king Hyogong tried to overcome the internal and external difficulties in those period through the changes of nderstanding Balhe.
