Herman Bavinck(1854-1921), one of the great three Reformed theologians of the 20th century, is generally well known as a dogmatician, Christian philosopher, pedagogue, etc. Yet, he is not well known as a preacher. For this there are two reasons we may point out. Firstly, Bavinck’s booklet on Eloquence (De welsprekendheid) is not known to many, for it is written in Dutch. It is very recent that the booklet is translated and edited in English by James P. Eglinton. Secondly, that we are here going to introduce his ‘The World-Conquering Power of Faith’(1 John 5:4b) is the only posthumous sermon by Bavinck. Comparing with Abraham Kuyper’s many published sermons, it is strange for us to have only one extant sermon of Bavinck. Yet Bavinck was an experienced and excellent preacher, exercised his pastoral ministry at Franeker around 19 months. Moreover, as a theologian he was frequently invited to preach the gospel at various churches and occasions.
As far as As far as his sermon is concerned, we can summarise three characteristics of it as follows. Firstly, Bavinck reminds the contemporary Church and Christians to live according to biblical principles in a rapidly changing world. According to Bavinck, the world that people has developed cannot change the heart of people. Only the faith that Jesus is Christ can do it, and conquers the world that always opposes God and His kingdom. Secondly, Bavinck’s sermon is featured as thoroughly biblical from the beginning to the end. His sermon is woven by so many biblical passages. Thirdly, the sermon of Bavinck has very vast in its depth and height and width and length. He shows the world-conquering power of faith with the eye penetrating the whole Scriptures, in the redemptive historical perspective freely quoting Old and New Testament. His sermon has not only such a theological depth, but also many practical applications expressed in plain language. Now we can learn many precious points from Bavinck’s only posthumous sermon which is for the first time translated into Korean.
