Report Errors
The history of Korean Wave in Taiwan can be roughly categorized into four stages: initial stage, developing stage, prosperous stage and popularizing stage. From the late 1980s to the late 1990s, Korean singers started to make appearances in Taiwan. This stage can be defined as the initial stage. From the year 2000 to around 2006, Korean drama took the lead in the Korean Wave and makes great achievements in the developing period. Later on, Korean Wave’s prosperous stage is dominated by the K-POP force. From then on, with all the Korean brands and products circulating in the Taiwanese market, the Korean Wave eventually reaches its popularizing stage. With the understanding of Korean Wave’s history in Taiwan, it shows that not only Taiwanese people are gradually taking a liking to Korean culture but are also getting more and more familiar with it. However, many Taiwanese have mistaken the content of Korean Wave for the Korean culture itself. Thus, this misunderstanding has become a great obstacle for people to understand the authenticity of Korean culture.
In addition to the popularity of Korean culture in Taiwan, there is also a development of Anti-Korean sentiment. This sentiment does not only pose as an obstacle between Taiwan and Korea’s communication but also brings about negative influences. The dispute and contradiction between Taiwan and Korea is not to be solved within a short period of time; nevertheless, finding solutions for improvement is necessary.
