This paper examines the so-called ‘genitive subject construction (GSC)’ in Korean and presents an alternative D-licensing analysis based on the assumption that a genitive DP in GSC is base-generated in Spec, DP and its inherent genitive case is licensed by a functional head (i.e. D0). On the theoretical or empirical ground, we argue against the two previous analyses (i.e. the Raising-based (D-licensing) and the complex C-T-V AGREE-based (C-licensing) analyses) in which a genitive DP and a nominative DP compete for the subject position of relative or nominal complement clauses appearing in GSC. Instead, on the basis of the assumption that genitive case is not structurally licensed but inherently licensed by a nominal head, we provide a pro-based analysis in which Korean GSC contains pro in the subject position of prenominal clauses, which is semantically associated with the genitive DP occurring in Spec, DP. This paper shows that our newly proposed DP structure provides better accounts for certain language-specific properties of GSCs in Korean.
