The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between objectively measured physical activity and cognitive function decline risk factors in elderly people who were voluntarily recruited from our local community. In a cross-sectional design, a total of 130 women elderly (mean age of 75.6) completed baseline measurements. They included MMSE-DS, body composition and blood pressure measurement, fating blood samples for serum beta-amyloid (Aβ), metabolic risk factors including glucose, TG and HDL-C assessments. Accelerometers provided estimates of physical activity variables for 7 consecutive days. The subjects were classified as Quartile_1 (LMPA ≤ 36.7 min/day) - Quartile_2 (36.8 ≤ LMPA ≤ 61.0 min/day) - Quartile_3 (61.1 ≤ LMPA ≤ 82.8 min/day) -, and Quartile_4 (LMPA ≥ 82.9 min/day) - physical activity level groups by adding measured the amount of light to moderate intensity physical activity (LMPA) with accelerometer. Groups showed significant linear decreases in mean age (p<.001), body fat (p=.008), WC (p=.002), systolic blood pressure (p<.001), diastolic blood pressure (p=.013) and serum Aβ1-40,42 (p<.001) across incremental LMPA levels. Similarly, there were a significant linear increase in MMSE-DS score (p<.001) and education levels (p=.014) across incremental LMPA levels. Multiple linear regression analysis show that LMPA levels (β=.340, p<.001) and Aβ1-42 (β=-.141, p=.034) were significant and independent predictors of MMSEDS based cognitive impairment even adjusted after age, education levels, BMI, smoking and alcohol intake. In summary, the current findings of the study suggest that physical activity participant in conjunction with proper management of obesity index, metabolic risk factors and Aβ should be key components of lifestyle interventions for those who are suffering from cognitive impairments associated with aging.
