The present study intended to shed light on the characteristics of Okinawa tourism by analysing Japanese tour guide books. Specifically, the tables of contents in the “Lulubu Okinawa” Tour Guide Books (published from 2012 to 2016) were analyzed in terms of word frequency and co-occurrence network to find out the trend of Okinawa tourism.
Also, regional characteristics of well-known tourist destinations on Okinawa island and islets were analyzed. First, in the analysis of word frequency in the tables of contents in the Lulubu Okinawa, the word ‘Okinawa’ was extracted most frequently from 2012 to 2014, whereas ‘cafe’ and ‘spot’ appeared most frequently in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Next, the analysis of the past five years indicated the co-occurrence relations between seas and cafes, west coast and areas, resorts and hotels, and sweets and tropical.
The analysis of Okinawan regional characteristics showed Naha and Suri regions had the largest number of tourist destinations except in 2016. In 2016, the south region topped the list in terms of the number of tourist destinations, whereas Yanbaru region was at the bottom over the 5 years. The present analyses highlighted distinct regional characteristics of tourist attractions across Okinawa.
