The purpose of this study is to investigate why people want to get tattoos and their psychological functions. For this purpose, this study conducted in-depth interviews with twelve men and women who have tattoos. The results are as follows: First, people with tattoos have had frequent exposure to tattoos through family, acquaintances, relatives and mass media before getting their tattoos, and already had favorable impression toward it. Second, The motive for getting tattoos were divided into two categories, aesthetic and symbolic. The former was composed of ‘a fashion item’, ‘personality expression’, and ‘looking sexy and attractive’. The latter included ‘strong-looking’, ‘pledge’, and ‘memorial of significant events and persons’. Third, the psychological benefits of tattoos are found to be relieving stress and healing, forming self-identity and providing ecstasy. Fourth, people had restrained their desire to get tattoos for a long time before getting their first one. When they could no longer suppress it, they got tattoos. After getting their first tattoos, they were temporarily satisfied, and relieved of their discontent. However, their desire to get additional tattoos become even stronger after the initial satisfaction wears off. they think that the tattoo-less parts of their body feel empty, so they become obsessed with the idea of filling the blank parts of their body parts with tattoos. They are unable to stop thinking about tattoos and become addicted to tattoos.
