The purpose of this paper is to examine the government reforms in Eastern Europe, mainly on the case of Hungary, which have been accomplished for responsing to the economic transformation. With the consideration of which the successful economic transition to a market economy should require for the so-called capitalist government structure, each state in Eastern Europe has abolished the socialist economic planning system and the related organizations, and has newly constituted the functions and role of central organizations. In this context, Hungary has first abolished the National Planning Office and has reformed the function of Prime Minister`s Office. Secondly, in line with the de-regulation on the national economy, some of the government organizations in charge of economic and commercial control have been integrated and abolished. Thirdly, Hungary has established the Competition Office and the Audit Office, etc. in order to encourage the operation of market economy. It is concluded that the present government reforms in Eastern Europe should be based on their own soils and characteristics of historical development.
