Report Errors
This phenomenological study aimed to grasp the vivid structure and context of the "difficulties experienced by novice play therapists". Data were collected from six participants during the period from July 2015 to December 2015. The interviews were conducted 2-3 times each for 30-90 minutes, and data were collected through frequent personal contact. Analysis of the data was conducted by categorizing the recorded interviews according to criteria such as meaning, similarity, and logical relevance of the key phrases. The following six themes were thus derived: “Putting me down”, “Having own standards”, “Endure”, “Understanding the back side”, “Conveying understanding”. This was verified by participant.
The results of the study are summarized as follows. First, the novice play therapist experiences difficulty in separating his or her desire from the counseling process. Second, novice play therapists experience difficulties in having their own standards. Third, novice play therapists experience difficulties in establishing trust in relationships with children and parents and enduring physical and psychological burnout. Fourth, the novice play therapist often has uneasy feelings, thoughts, and financial burdens. Fifth, novice play therapists have difficulty in understanding and integrating child’s play, child, and parent. Sixth, the novice play therapist experiences difficulties in conveying his / her interests properly.
This study has practical implications in that it provided basic data that could be used for the training and education of play therapists.
