The purpose of this study is to find out what kind of problems consumers are experiencing when overseas shopping online and how they are responding when problems arise. Also, this study examined the motivation to reuse overseas online shopping in spite of experiencing problems, and sought to solve the problem of overseas online shopping proposed by consumers. In this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with women in their thirties and the results are as follows.
First, consumers perceived the risk that they might encounter problems before shopping online. They felt difficulties in shopping mall sites, settlement, and language during the purchase and experienced problems related to customs tax, customs standards and exchange rate. After purchasing, consumers were unsure of whether they had bought it properly. Some consumers did not buy as cheaply as they expected, or they were overpaid to meet the tax exemption criteria.
Second, among the consumers who experienced problems in overseas online shopping, they contacted the customer center directly to solve the problem. At this time, consumers felt difficult because they had to contact according to the local time in foreign countries and communicate in a foreign language. Other consumers stopped overseas shopping online or used overseas purchasing agents. Consumers who wanted to repurchase searched more information and bought it carefully.
Third, as a result of examining the reasons why consumers are repurchasing after experiencing problems, they have been purchasing with feeling of accomplishment from completion of complicated purchase, price that is not burdensome, and feeling of hedonism due to differentiation from others. Some consumers said they were addicted to online shopping or repurchased impulsively. Also some of them were confident that they could cope with the problems and that problems could happen in everywhere. Other reasons for repurchasing were economic prices, product scarcity and diversity.
Finally, for government, consumers suggested that information and experts are needed to help solve problems related to online shopping overseas. Also, consumers wanted to diversify listing customs and raise tax exemption standards, and consumers have pointed out that prohibiting the import of certain products or preventing them from reselling products purchased for personal use is not consumer-friendly. For domestic companies, consumers suggested that manufacturers should produce safe products and lower domestic market prices to transform overseas consumers into domestic markets, and Overseas delivery agencies should thoroughly inspect the shipment and notify key issues that consumers need to know.
