This study aims not only to measure the quality of life of dwellers in Gyeonggi Province but also to make sense of its longitudinal dynamics for the future. It is the initial and exploratory survey research for the quality of life in this region that approximately counts for one quarter of South Korean population. It has several specific purposes that delve into comprehending and improving local realities. 1) It establishes the basis of evidence-based policy study through analyzing individual-level microdata from provincial-level survey. 2) It aims at investigating complex dynamics regarding the person’s quality of life by constructing panel data that will be implemented following studies. 3) This study focuses on identifying needs and demands of policies that are not government-driven but citizen-oriented ways. Here we scrutinize into in-depth analyses for targeting population and why citizens want them. 4) This research has a plan to achieve a desirable level of compatibility by comparing with local, national, global-level surveys so that we can locate the current situations of Gyeonggi Province in a more objective way.
This survey, to which 20,000 households in Gyeonggi Province responded in 2016, is composed of eight categories that evidently constitute a person’s quality of life: 1) family, 2) housing, 3) household finances, 4) employment, 5) transportation, 6) environment, 7) social cohesion, and 8) subjective well-being. In order to build survey questionnaires for eight categories, we reviewed a variety of existing researches, including both cross-sectional social surveys and panel surveys. In addition, this study describes the entire processes of conducting this survey in detail and reports some key findings.
