Analyzing Britain’s Renegotiation of the Terms of EU Membership in February 2016: Domestic Politics Approach vs. Liberal Intergovernmentalism.
This paper aims at analyzing Britain’s renegotiation of the terms of EU membership in February 2016 led by the then Prime Minister David Cameron. Two contrasting theoretical perspectives, Domestic Politics Approach (DPA) and Liberal Intergovernmentalism (LIG), are taken to examine the process leading to the renegotiation. Both are useful in concluding that such economic actors as British companies and the financial services had not pushed the government to seek new terms of membership from the EU. Yet, DPA shows more explanatory power in elucidating personality factor for the renegotiation.
