The establishment plan of Gyeongju Art School, the first Art School in Korea, was released on October 31, 1945 immediately after liberation. The Plan was accredited as a two-year art school. Since opening on May 5, 1946, despite the owner was changed twice, Gyeongju Art School had been operated continuously until June 1952. Although the exact time was unknown, it was closed before 1953. There were lots of plans to establish Art School in South Korea, but only the Gyeongju Art School was approved as a school and maintained for more than six years.
Gyeongju Art School was not national nor public, and nor was established by private foundation. It was founded by the Gyeongju Cultural Association, a local artist group in Gyeongju. School establishment and operation by the Association and Gyeongju Cultural Association was a group of artists with a tendency to the left which introduced the public enlightenment movement. According to the notes of 1st graduator Joe Heesu, curriculum focused on aesthetics and poetry unlike that of the Seoul National University emphasized on Fine Arts.
Unfortunately the Gyeongju Cultural Association could not overcome the financial difficulties, so transfers all rights including debts to Lee Chaewoo and the school board. The school board closed the music department which had a lot of students with radical ideas, and changed the curriculum. However, those who were willing to run schools could not overcome various problems and transfer their school operating rights to the Mansong Foundation. At the time of the Mansong, the school was promoted to a 3-year Art School with 3 departments, paintings, sculptures and crafts. Since 1950, Kim Junsik invited professors of art department of Hongik University to establish a system of art college. But class was not done because of outbreak of the Korean War and going to North Korea of some professors.
Nevertheless, during the war period, Kim Junsik, and fellow professors - Kim Mansul, Yun Gyeongryeol, Son Sootaek and Choi Kiseok continued to run school with artists who escaped to Gyeongju. Their amazing practices were never made by chance. They had unique experiences. On these solid bases, Gyeongju Art School was able to run an art school for 6years.
