The main topic of my research is Japan’s medieval-age Ikki. The image of Ikki tends to be strongly associated with peasant uprisings, but that image properly belongs only to the Edo period. Ikki in medieval Japan were not riots but groups of members all equal in status, who united to achieve a certain objective. In medieval times, Ikki groups were formed almost every part of the country and in every strata of society. In this presentation I examine Ikki groups formed by locally based samurai (kokujin).
When Ikki were formed, Ikki members signed the contract document called Ikki-Keijo. Ikki-Keijo were documents with which Ikki members sweared to gods(kami). They include details of pledges and the sentence such as “If I broke the vow, I would be punished by gods.” In the process of forming Ikki, they sometimes burned out the Ikki-Keijo, mixed their ashes with a holy water (Sinsui), and drunk them. This mysterious ritual was called Ichimi-Sinsui by Japan’s medieval people.
Therefore, medieval historians emphasize the magical aspects af the Ikki. They consider Ikki as mystically inspired groups based on religious beliefs. This view is based on a methodology of social history.
However, my re-examination of Ikki-Keijo written by kokujin has revealed that they had two aims: one was to show oath to kami and the other was to demonstrate the solidarity of those who singed it to outside groups. In fact Ikki-Keijo were often exhibited to outsiders.
In addition, Ichimi-Sinsui performed by many kokujin could have been itself a threatening action against outside groups. I argue that kokujin sometimes declared the formation of Ikki and displayed its power toward outside groups through making Ikki-Keijo and Ichimi-Sinsui. Holding Ichimi-Sinsui didn’t denote that Ikki were religious groups.
Social historians has been focused on minds and values of medieval people. As a result, They regard them as more religious people than in reality. With further analysing Ikki-Keijos. We can understand the reality of Ikki.
