Deleuze, French modern philosopher tries to solve Pachohaecheong[芭蕉慧淸]"s Hwadu [話頭] in his work Logic of Sense, saying that if you have a cane, I am giving you one; if you do not have one, I am taking it away. He succeeds in catching the correct meaning of negation involved in the hwadu, along with the meaning of negation involved in Mallareme" words and Chrysippos"s phrases. This hwadu is the forty-fourth hwadu of the Collections of Precedent Stories[公案集], No-Door to Gate[『無門關』].
When we try to solve the hwadus of No-Door to Gate, including Pachohaecheong"s hwadu, we can use all the topics in Logic of Sense as guidelines on the interpretation on them. But the topics that I selected in this paper are the four paradoxes of sense, the esoteric words and the portmanteau words, and nonsense and absurdity. I summarize Deleuze"s exposition on each topic, and then apply it to the hwadus of No-Door to Gate, and lastly elucidate Deleuze"s interpretation on Pachohaecheong"s hwadu.
Since sense is the event that is becoming, we can apprehend it in terms of paradox. Deleuze find out that the paradox of sense occurs when sense is serializing. In order to make this paradox clear, he seperates the sense from serialization and discover the paradox of regress, the paradox of sterile division, the paradox of neutrality, and the paradox of the absurd.
Since hwadu is composed of paradox, it can be grasped when grasped in accordance with the paradox of sense Deleuze is stating. Therefore, we can apply these four paradoxes to the hwadus of No-Door to Gate. The reason why sense is grasped as paradox is because sense is derived from, and dependent on nonsense and absurdity. So I try to find from No-Door to Gate hwadus that may be applied to nonsense and absurdity. As a result of the analysis based on Deleuze"s ‘logic of sense’, I was able to attain a substantial outcome, which is as in the following. Basically, all the hwadus from No-Door to Gate is directed toward nonsense and absurdity. Most of hwadus from No-Door to Gate tell stories about the paradoxical instances, but make differences according to which aspect they are emphasized on. That is, there are hwadus that tell a story about the paradoxical instance x alone(the 5th archetypal story), ones that tell a story about word x of the paradoxical instance x(the 18th archetypal story), and ones that tell a story about thing x of the paradoxical instance x(the 43th archetypal story). In addition, there are hwadus that tell a story about the structure of nonsense and sense(the 44th archetypal story), and about nonsense and absurdity(the 26the archetypal story).
