This paper examined the bilingual imagination, the confucian world view, and the image of the future from Keumkye Diary which had been written by Sang Young Kwak from 1934 to 2000 for 64 years. Kwak had been a teacher(1941~47), deputy-principal(1947-57), and principal(1957-1980) of an elementary school. He had written the diary in Japanese while under Japanese colonialism(~1945), then mainly Korean and a little Chinese after the liberation(1945) until 1961, then a little Korean and mainly Chinese characters after 1961. When he had used mainly Korean in his diary, he had expressed rich emotion and extensive personal thoughts everyday. His writing style was romantic. But his Chinese diary showed that he just described the development of events without emotion. He had lost the romanticism in his diary after depending heavily on Chinese characters. He also had been stucked on a Confucianism perspective and Confucian style of education. He expressed universal love or benevolence(仁) for his students with the attitude and mindset of parents. In this sense, filial loyalty and a spirit of benevolence are extended to family, kin members, students, and neighbors. Thus, he was trying to fulfill very hard the creeds of Confucianism in daily life. The future image of Kwank also influenced the desire and image for future, and he focused on the present rather the vision of hope for the future. Because the present is more realistic, he focused on present life and profit. He gave more importance on the communal gain, future of family, and neighbors. Kwak dreamed of communal society without the discrimination over female or by status and wealth.
