Examined in this article is the “Line of Succession of Goryeo Kings(高麗世系)” featured inside Koryo-sa, which would let us understand how the line of succession inside the royal family of Goryeo was viewed by people in the past.
In the early half of the Goryeo dynasty period, there were two types of notion featured in the people’s recognition or indication of the Goryeo royal family’s line of succession. Those were the notion of “Three Ancestors,” and the notion of the “Six Ancestors.” The former type of notion emerged for the first time in Wang Geon’s second year in the throne(919), during the process of commemorating Founder king Taejo Wang Geon’s father, grandfather and great grandfather. Then later, the latter type was first mentioned in the 12th century, when the mysterious and auspicious actions of the founder king’s ancestors were recorded and honored, in order to raise the sitting king’s political profile. Five ancestors of Wang Geon (up to Wang Geon’s 5th generation ancestor) were mentioned, revealing a new notion which was essentially three more generations added to the existing “Three ancestors” notion.
These two notions also continued into the latter half period of Goryeo. The former was embraced by records such as Wangdae Jongjok-gi or Pyeon’nyeon Gangmok, while the latter was employed by Jewang Un’gi, Seong’weon-rok and Pyeon’nyeon Jeolyo. Interestingly enough, among all these texts Pyeon’nyeon Gangmok, which appreciated the mystical elements of Pyeon’nyeon Tong’rok but only mentioned figures below Wang Geon’s great grandfather, effectively merged the “Three ancestors’ and “Six ancestors” notions. We can see that in the second half of Goryeo, the notions from the dynasty’s first half were embraced yet modified, to reflect contemporary dynamics, perspectives and necessities.
