Manufacturers have been applying several technologies to enhance fuel economy on their cars. In contrast, other manufacturers have increased their cars’ fuel economy through deliberate smooth driving capabilities. Since the driving technique could significantly impact the fuel economy of a vehicle, the U.S. had developed drive quality evaluation(DQE) indexes(EER, ASCR, RMSSE, and IWR), and has been monitoring the indexes of a manufacturer’s independent certification tests. Also, the UNECE is preparing a new regulation regarding the indexes that are applicable to WLTC. In this paper, to set the DQE index threshold for the formal fuel economy certificate test(FTP-75 and HWFET), a diesel vehicle was tested according to three driving styles(smooth, rough, and normal), while the DQE indexes of the past 150 formal tests were analyzed statistically. Smooth driving showed increased fuel economy of up to 5.8 % than that of normal driving, while rough driving showed a decrease of up to 3.1 %. Also, a gap is expected to have a threshold value between the DQE indexes of the two different styles of driving and of normal driving. In the statistical analysis, 2σ percentile of the indexes were similar with their own 2σ normal probability, and they were within the range. Therefore, the probability was proposed as a reasonable DQE index threshold. Furthermore, since IWR was closely related with ASCR, either of the two might be excluded as the index.
