I observed so far: in The Scarlet Letter , while after committing an adultery the Puritan Pastor Dimmesdale was wandering in the midst of guilty conscience and sense of sin, fear and pain, Hester Prynne a transcendentalist whispered to him saying, "Never, never! What we did had a consecration of its own“(140), whereupon the Pastor realized that act done in love is sacred so that it does not entail sense of guilt.
In The House of the Seven Gables, due to the serpent(Satan)-like, greedy Colonel Pyncheon and Judge Pyncheon sowed the seed of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and Clifford and Holgrave and Hapzibah thereafter wandered around in guilt and pain as a fugitive evicted from the Garden of Eden. And the house of seven gables became dark, gloomy, and haunted. Then Pheobe a symbol of light and life shows up, and through the marriage with Holgrave who had a grudge, a member of the Maule family, the Garden of Eden is regained, puts back to society Clifford, Hepzeba and Holgrave, so that a magnetic human relationship connected.
In the The Blithedale Romance , Westvelt who is a transcendentalist and a man of avarice like that of serpent, via marriage, robbed Zenobia of her virginity. Zenobia loved Hollingsworth, but on learning that Hollingsworth had chosen Priscilla over her, she committed suicide. Hollingworth was shocked at her death, and came to fall from a secure position, like Adam suffered from guilty conscience, and psychological conflicts. Then through Priscilla"s altruistic love he is healed of his wounds. Hollingsworth as a transcendentalist is like Adam before fall. He felt that He is egoist and self centered man. He needs other"s love and help.
