This paper examines Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter as a critique of sin and its implications within Puritan society, focusing on the portrayal of its three central characters. As a descendant of Puritan settlers, Hawthorne was deeply troubled by the moral rigidity and oppressive religiosity of Puritan culture. Through his novel, he explores the multifaceted nature of sin and its consequences, and delves into themes such as redemption, guilt, and punishment in its characters. Hester Prynne, publicly condemned as a sinner, transforms her shame and suffering into a journey of personal growth. She embodies universal compassion and humanistic values that challenge the Puritan doctrine of predestination. Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, crushed by the weight of unconfessed guilt, ultimately achieves redemption through public confession, serving as a symbol of humanity’s inherent frailty. In contrast, Roger Chillingworth represents the corrosive effects of vengeance and the dangers of intellectual pursuits divorced from morality. His sin transforms him into a symbol of the destructive power of unchecked resentment and its capacity to consume the human spirit.
