Until now, Vietnamese children"s war literature was spoken and represented by American writers, not Vietnamese, from the perspective of ‘Americans.’ Inside Out and Back Again, written by Vietnamese-American writer Thanhha Lai, is significant in that it is a confession of a witness who personally experienced war and immigration. Lai focuses on the war and migration experience of a young girl, the narrator. And she realistically and delicately depicts the lives of immigrants who are stigmatized by war and racial discrimination. Most Children"s books on Vietnamese refugees lack a clear ideological stance. There is no explanation as to why the Vietnam War happened, why America is involved and entangled in it. In Inside Out and Back Again, Lai wanted to tell the real story of Vietnam refugees, not the general narrative of ‘escape - immigration - success.’ She tells about the life and experience of Vietnamese refugees who have lost their tradition, culture, language, and identity to the war. By talking about Vietnamese refugees as cultural and racial others, she helps children understand others who are different from me and young readers will learn how to treat others with love and hospitality.
