The purpose of this study is to explore the ethnic identity formation and behavior in the context of transnational practices among the 1.5 and second generations of Vietnamese Immigrants in the United States. Based on the theoretical orientations of ethnicity of both primordialism and circumstantialism, the present study investigates the activities and responsibility of the children of Vietnamese immigrants practiced in the context of transnationalism. The study is concerned with the concept of trnasnationalism including both actual transnational activities and imagined returns to the homeland. Symbolic transnationalism is more available to the Vietnamese- American community, especially to the 1.5 and second generations. The study is particularly interested in the ways in which young Vietnamese Americans imagine Vietnam, their perceived responsibilities toward the country, and the critical role that the representation of Vietnam plays in the construction of their ethnic identity in the United States. Although this study emphasizes the transnationalism at symbolic level, it extends the investigation into the possibility of the actual transnational activities. Trips to Vietnam affirms the value and appeal of transnational engagements. Building on primodialist conceptions of what it means to be Vietnamese that is conveyed to them by the immigrant parents, trips to Vietnam affirms to the 1.5 and second generations of Vietnamese-Americans the potency and significance of Vietnamese membership. Among other things, Vietnamese membership come to be understood as strategically valuable, a way to reap rewards from the globalizing world economy.
