In rural areas, women are aware of their limitations and obligations to their family. Wives have the responsibility to serve their husbands and educate their children. It has aiready been proven that the capability of women cannot be ignored and in many ways they are more cautious in taking action than men. We believe the role of women is very important as mentors and educators of children at home and also in their environment. Women as mothers are powerful and have big influence on their children. They can provide knowledge and awareness for their children. Children as future generation of the nation must have the determination to build the nation with environmentally sound principles. Mothers can teach their children to be loving and respectful of the environment. This will greatly affect forest conservation.
Women in rural areas are usually not given the opportunity to acquire advanced knowledge. They usually engage in physical labor in their daily life with no opportunity to exercise their higher thinking power. The place I work for, Leuser International Foundation (LlF), an environmental NGO focusing on education, economics, and gender issues finds it necessary to approach men in villages and make them aware of the need to provide more freedom to their wives and daughters. The economic factor is significant and highly influential to convince husbands that their wives will be able to contribute to the improvement of the family economy. The provision of capacity building through simple training to housewives to increase their self-confidence and courage is necessary for women in rural areas. Better education for these women and their children will benefit their families and the community as a whole as the children are the future generation.
