Though considered as the most modern and open minded social class, the majority of Vietnamese youth still believe and preserve the values of hegemonic masculinity–emphasized femininity and highly beware of traditional gender roles. Studies on Vietnamese youth generally focus on such fields as employment, reproductive health and sexually transmitted diseases. Many studies about employment center on the gender gap of labor force in some particular professions; however, they lack in-depth analysis about perceptions of the youth on gender and the role of gender. The press usually describes youth as a modern and progressive generation, but media exposure can cause harmful impact when there have been series of articles about the latest fashion trends, premature love and “living together before marriage.” Still, there has been no study aimed at measuring Vietnamese youth’s open-mindedness and their conceptions about gender equality. We hope that findings from this research will provide useful information about youth and gender, assist related programs in gender activities and help civil society focus on practical, extensive and long-term effects.
