We examine intergenerational coresidence in South Korea. As nuclear family becomes a dominant family form, intergenerational coresidence is supposed to diminish. Intergenerational coresidence, however, is structured by demographic changes as well as changes in family norm. Because of mortality decline, human beings are exposed to the ‘risk’ of intergenerational coresidence longer than before. Fertility decline has different implications for parents than children. As family size becomes smaller, the number of children available to coreside with decreases while the ‘competition’ to coreside with parents among siblings becomes weaker. Hence, while fertility decline reduces intergenerational coresidence from the parental perspective, this has the opposite implication from the offspring’s perspective. The pattern of intergenerational coresidence also depends on socioeconomic status given differential mortality and fertility. We are using the Korean micro census data to examine the changes in intergenerational coresidence in Korea. Our preliminary analysis reveals the following patterns. First, coresidence with parents increased. This reflects the reduction in fertility and delayed marriage. Second, coresidence with children decreased, reflecting fertility decline. Third, educational differentials in intergenerational coresidence differ by gender. While education and coresidence with parents are positively associated among men, there is negative association among women. The opposite is the case for coresidence with children. The implications of these findings and future plan will be discussed.
