A Jungian approach to Conrad’s The Shadow-Line is rewarding. Not only does his story echo the archetypal theme of the rite de passage, but it introduces a character representing the Jungian shadow. Assuming the role of protagonist in an initiation story, the novice sea captain goes through a rite of passage in his first command and comes to learn something essential to responsible captaincy. Among the factors that lead to his spiritual growth is his hearing about the late captain through the first mate, Mr. Burns. By his aberrant behavior, the dead captain seems to be the antithesis of an honorable shipmaster. He is to the narrator what the shadow is to the self in Jungian psychology. The shadow stands for the negative side of the psyche. It is deeply repressed into the unconscious and so incompatible with the conscious part. It seems to the young captain that his predecessor jeopardized the seaman’s work ethic. What really matters, however, is that the late captain could serve the narrator as a reminder of his own potential evils. Recognizing the possibility that the latent evils may translate themselves to realities at any moment leads the protagonist to the threshold of the process that Jung calls individuation. His awakening to those evils signals his progress towards being psychologically whole through a reconciliation with the dark side of his personality. The alleged malignant influence of the dead captain who personifies the shadowy part of the narrator’s psyche impinges on him so subtly that it effects uncanniness, like the return of the repressed.
