During the Korean War (June 1950~armistice signed July 1953), the type of published cartoons outnumbered that of textbooks. It was the very first time to witness this exceptional situation ever since the first publication of a comic book in Korea after the independence. Cartoons were utilized in various forms for effective propaganda; not only on leaflets, but also on newspapers, posters, and even pamphlets. During this era, the works of Korean cartoonists were either propaganda cartoons or entertainment cartoons which were for their livelihood.
It was also the time of new cartoonists and the opportunity for practicing. Cartoons were the major means of ideological & psychological warfare and they were used in notably various forms: The cartoon newspaper ‘The Cartoon Victory, 『만화승리』’ published by The South Korean Defense Ministry, anti-communism cartoon pamphlet ‘A Communism Invasion and the Countermove of U.N, 『공산침략과 유엔의 응수』’ from USIS, and the cartoon magazine ‘Hwal-sal, 『활살』’ published by the North Korean army represent the tense psychological warfare between the two sides. In addition, such psychological war can also be witnessed in the contents of entertainment cartoons which were published in a large scale. This research mainly focus on discovering the development of the Cold War culture in Korean society by analyzing the cartoons of the Korean War era.
