This study aimed to explore the opinions and views on the school readiness of mothers who have preschool children going to play-oriented kindergartens. This study has been conducted at HaRang kindergarten in Seoul, and the samples for this study were ten mothers who have five preschool children in Bada and Sora class each. Data were collected from in-depth interviews.
This study has several novel findings. First, mothers who have children around 5 years of age had an understanding about preparation for school in terms of adapting to school life, learning, and developing interpersonal skills. Second, it was shown that mothers have a variety of anxieties before their children actually start school. Third, mothers required government support for kindergarten and elementary schools based on their worries and woes about preschool education.
To minimize mothers’ mental burdens, it is important to support the children at home, in local communities, and in school. It is crucial to make collaborative efforts as part of a systematic scheme that is also in line with the requirements for a better school life for children.
