This report proposes to study what the characteristics of mind-only theory appeared in the Laṅkāvatārasūtra (LAS). To achieve this, two steps were taken out to facilitate an in-depth discussion. Foremost, it examined three kinds of characteristics of the mind-only in the early Mahayana Buddhist texts, especially Buddhist Sutras classified by a Japanese Buddhist scholar named Sakamoto. Based on these three kinds of the mind-only theory, this paper was speculated what and how the LAS was influenced by these early developed theories of the mind-only. As the result, the most important fact was discovered that there are four stages of the way of practices in the LAS in order to attain the final end that is Buddha stage. Among four stages, the goal of the first stage is to aware of the mind-only related to the theory of non-self.
Second, it was inspected what the philosophical relationship between the LAS and the Madhyamaka school held. This view was particularly approached in the context of the debate between Madhyamaka and Yogācāra school in Indian Buddhist history. It is because Madhyamakas quoted frequently passages from the LAS when they criticized Yogācāra’s interpretations of Buddhist theories. This composition, therefore, took a look the passages in the LAS quoted by Madhyamakas and related to the ideas of Madhyamakas. As the result, it turned out that the teachings of the mind-only in the LAS are identical with the philosophical positions of the Madhyamaka school that the mind-only is only valid on the conventional truth, but not on the ultimate truth.
