Hong Eurn is a representative independence patriot who was active in North America. He infused the spirit of independence through literary activities. In North America and South America, his independence movement developed in two directions of infusion of independent thought through literary activities and independence movement fundraising activities. In particular, Hong thought that the best way for the independence movement in the two continents after the March First Movement was to provide funds for the independence movement.
Unusually, Hong’s fundraising activities for the independence movement was undertaken by Chinese residing in North America. He initiated activities to collect funds for the independence movement from Chinese people all across the United States and Canada immediately after the March First Movement. And then, visiting Panama, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Jamaica, and elsewhere for more than one year from June of 1921 to June of the following year, he raised funds for the independence movement from Chinese in those countries. The funds for the independence movement that he collected in North America played a great role in supporting the independent movements of the Korean National Association, The Korean Commission to America and Europe, the Korean Provisional Government, and other organizations.
Hong started raising funds for the independence movement from Chinese living in North America after the March First Movement. Appointed as an overseas Chinese member of the Korean National Association, he collected money for the independence movement from overseas Chinese, and by himself raised the enormous amount of $10,000 from overseas Chinese west of the Rocky Mountains. Subsequently, appointed as the overseas Chinese member of the Korean Commission to America and Europe, he raised funds for the independence movement from Chinese by visiting each area and was sent by the Korean Commission to North America and Europe.
There is no specific data for estimating how much money for the independence movement Hong raised while visiting Central America and South America for approximately one year, from 1921 to 1922. He used the travel expenses required for his visit to Central America and South America from the funds for the independence movement that he had collected. Therefore, although he raised a large amount of funds for the independence movement in Central America and South America, more than half of those monies could not but be used as expenses.
The Korean independence movement occurred all over the world, in such places as China, Russia, Southeast Asia, and elsewhere. However, the fact that the Korean independence movement developed in North America, Canada, and even Central America and South America has not been known in detail. Hong propagated the Korean independence movement widely among the Chinese in Canada, Central America, and South America through which he raised funds for the independence movement.
