The concept of Prajña is the key word of the whole series of prajñāpāramitā sūtras, one of the most important Mahāyāna scriptures. Sengzhao, who is regarded as the first Chinese Buddhist scholar understanding the core of Buddhism, wrote articles dealing with the concept of prajñā and contributed to the later development of Mahāyāna Buddhism in East Asia. Studies on Sengzhao’s writings have been done, mainly in Comparison to the Mādhyamaka writings to prove the influence of Lao-Zhuang philosophy on his understanding of Buddhist concepts, though not denying his achievements in rejecting the erroneous understanding of Buddhism based on Daoism. This being the case, this paper seeks to explore his understanding of the concept ‘prajñā’ in comparison with early Buddhist scriptures to confirm that the basis of his Buddhist understanding was derived from early Buddhist teachings and not the Lao-Zhuang philosophy. Through distinction between prajñā insight and the realization of the Absolute Truth, Sengzhao emphasized the crucial moment of the final liberation, which was described in early Buddhist suttas through the corresponding pairs of ‘the liberation through lack of sustenance’ and ‘the supreme sustenance.’ Here will be shown that the seemingly Daoist concept of ‘not-knowing’ in Sengzhao’s writings is thoroughly served to describe the most important moment of the Buddhist realization, the elimination of the notion of emptiness.
