Previous research on adult mental health have mostly focused on personal characteristics and the social environment in explaining mental health inequality but have yet to touch upon the effect early (before adulthood) life events have on mental health. Expanding upon previous research, the current study, based on the life course approach and the stress theory, examined the influence life events inside the family have on adult mental health. Also by examining the mediating and buffering effects of socioeconomic resource and socal-relational resource, the research attempted to understand the role experiences before adulthood and capital during adulthood play in understanding mental health. In the model where the dependant variable was ‘depression’, multiple linear regression was used, and where the dependant variable was ‘suicidal thoughts’, binomial logistic was used in the analysis. Results demonstrated that while controlling for the background variables, life-events inside the family had a negative influence on mental health, and a mediating effect existed more in the social-relational resource than the socioeconomic resource. In other words, interpersonal relationship and family life satisfaction only mediated the relationship between life-events inside the family and mental health, partially. A buffering effect only existed in depression. In other words, groups with high levels of family income, interpersonal relationship and family life satisfaction were less influenced in the relationship between early-life events and mental health.
