The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of short-term isometric exercise (IE) on body composition, hemodynamic factors and endocrine hormones in males and females. The subjects consisted of 24 college students (11 males and 13 females) who were instructed to practice IE 3 times per week for 4 weeks. IE contents were eight IE exercises such as 1-full-body-exercise, 6-upper body-workouts and 1-abdominal-exercise. 30-seconds rest was prescribed between sets and exercises of 5-seconds maximal IE. This study utilized repeated measurement ANOVA, t-test and multiple regression analysis for investigating the effects of IE and factors anticipating muscle mass. The results were as follows. First, short-term IE had no effects on the increment or decrement of lean-body mass, while it showed a meaningful improving impacts on obesity indicators in male participants. Second, the levels of hemodynamic factors in males were higher than in females. Short-term IE showed no significant decrement in the levels of hemodynamic variables in both genders. Third, the fluctuation levels of endocrine hormones regarding short-term IE in females were higher than in males. Short-term IE showed significant positive effects on the metabolism of insulin and lipid in females. Fourth, short-term IE was related to the increment of the independent factors associated with the explanation and anticipation for muscle mass in both genders. In conclusion, short-term IE leads to significant decrease in obesity indicators such as fat mass, percent body fat, WHR, BMI in males, which suggests that short-term IE has positive effect on the improvement of body composition. Although short-term IE does not lead to significant improvement of hemodynamic variables in both genders, the results of this study suggest that the improvement possibility of hemodynamic factors by practicing short-term IE is higher in females than in males. Short-term IE leads to decrement in human growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor 1 and is related to increment of testosterone in females, which suggests that short-term IE activates the metabolism of insulin and lipid, and the pathways of lean mass increment in females. Regardless of gender, short-term IE increases the variables of body composition, hemodynamics and endocrine hormone that explain and anticipate muscle mass, which indicates that short-term IE leads to the improvement and activation of these variables.
