Notwithstanding the economic rise, the Jews in Argentina were seen as repressed middle class until the 1980s. Today the myth of middle class is part truth, part illusion. The socioeconomic status of Argentine Jews experienced many changes after the democratization in the 1980s. New data on income level and political participation, presented in the early 2000s, enable us to develop a different point of view about the status. The objective of this paper is to examine the changes in socioeconomic status of the Jews in Argentina, and to try a new interpretation about it.
In this paper, we will analyze the demographic factors of Argentine Jews. examine the process in which Jews occupied an intermediate space in the economy from the early years of immigration to the 1980s, and define the new socioeconomic status of Argentine Jews according to the changing conditions in the political participation, the income level and the influence in a certain industry like financial business.
