The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in the aiming ability between dominant and non-dominant hands with increasing age by analyzing the performance level of dart-throwing. A total of 75 females participated in the experiment as subjects, 15 each in age groups of Childhood, Early Adolescence, Adolescence, Middle Age, and Senescence. Subjects performed dart-throwing task at the distance of 2.37 m with dominant and non-dominant hand. From the measured data, average radial error and average variable error were calculated and analyzed by 2-way ANOVAs(5 age groups × 2 hands) with repeated measure on the last factor. Analysis of performance accuracy revealed that while the Childhood and Senescence groups showed no difference between dominant and non-dominant hand conditions, the Early Adolescence, Adolescence, and Middle Age groups displayed significantly higher accuracy in the dominant hand condition than the non-dominant. In both hand conditions, the performance accuracy of the Childhood group was significantly lower than those of other age groups. In the non-dominant hand condition, however, the accuracy of the Senescence group was significantly lower than those of the Early Adolescence, Adolescence and Middle Age groups. Analysis of performance consistency revealed that while the Senescence group showed no difference between dominant and non-dominant hand conditions, other groups displayed higher accuracy in the dominant hand condition than the non-dominant. As the accuracy result, the performance consistency of the Senescence group was lower than those of the Early Adolescence, Adolescence and Middle Age groups in the non-dominant hand condition, and than those of all other groups in the dominant hand condition. These results suggest that the aiming ability develops rapidly after childhood, performance of the dominant hand being superior to that of the non-dominant hand. In the Senescence, however, the aiming ability deteriorates substantially because of the decrease in the coordination of vision and hands, especially in the performance of the dominant hand.
