This study looks into sense of separation called history—caste system, religion and moral views, problem of ethnicity, Marxism—which stands out in The God of Small Things written by Arundhati Roy and suggests nature as its alternative. Complete unity of Velutha and Ammu is accomplished within the bounds of nature and this study intends to read the view on ecology unique to this novel exposed in this scene from Confucian perspective on ecology. Various colors which each entity possesses as a special being rooted in a specific region emphasized by Confucian perspective on ecology coincide with the points of emphasis in this novel which takes note of ‘entity.’ Futhermore, cyclic link formed by interchanging Velutha and nature is not different from the Unity of Heaven and Humanity (天人合一) in Confucian perspective on ecology. Velutha discovers ‘ontological and cosmological value’ in each minute natural thing and the forms it creates while changing incessantly and dynamically and at the same time, undergoes expansive experience in which he finds out the value of footprints he has left as an untouchable.
